You Closed! Now What? (Your Post-Closing Checklist)
It’s Friday, the paperwork is signed, and the keys are officially in your hand—congratulations! Closing on your Albuquerque home is a major milestone, but there are a few important steps to take before you fully settle in.
To help you start strong, here’s a practical “First 48 Hours” checklist every new homeowner should follow:
1. Change the Locks

This is priority number one. You never know how many spare keys are still out there from previous owners, contractors, or neighbors.
Consider upgrading to a smart lock system for added security and convenience—it’s a simple improvement that makes a big difference from day one.
2. Locate the Main Shut-Offs

Take a few minutes to find and familiarize yourself with:
- The main water shut-off
- The electrical panel
- The gas shut-off (if applicable)
In an emergency, knowing exactly where these are can save time, money, and stress. Label them clearly so they’re easy to access when needed.
3. Deep Clean Before Moving In

Even if the home was left “broom clean,” nothing beats a true deep clean before your furniture arrives.
Cleaning floors, carpets, windows, and high-touch areas while the home is empty is far more efficient—and it sets the tone for a fresh start in your new space.
4. File for Property Tax Exemptions

In New Mexico, don’t overlook available property tax exemptions such as Head of Household or Veteran’s benefits. These programs can reduce your annual tax bill and add long-term savings.
If you’re unsure how to file, I’m happy to point you in the right direction.
